This is from www.googoodolls.com in the news section. 02.25.08: Songwriters Hall of Fame Award John Rzeznik has been named the recipient of the 2008 Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award. The Starlight Award has been established to honor those creators and performers who have made a significant impact on the music community in the early stages of their career. This is fantastic! What a terrific accomplishment. Congratulations John.

| I don't want to sound like John doesn't deserve an award here and there, but in what alternate universe is John 'in the early stages of his career'? He's 42 with a 22 year career and 8 studio releases. Past recipients: 2007 John Legend (at age 28 ) 2006 John Mayer (at age 28 ) 2005 Alicia Keys (at age 24/25, Wikipedia doesn't know how old she is, and therefore, neither do I) 2004 Rob Thomas (at age 32) I'm happy for him and everything, but if I were honored with an award calling me a beginner 20 years into my career I'd be making some pretty angry phone calls...

I dunno... a) maybe he looks so much younger than he is that they didn't realize he's not in the early stages of his career. b) they didn't do their research an have no knowledge of how long he's been in the music business. c) maybe they don't like "the new stuff", and really want to say what a great job he did in the early stages of his career. Anyway, crats to John. (the above suggestions are mere snarkiness, meant in jest, and have no factual basis. In other words...just kidding kids.)

Yay! Congrats John! He well more than deserves this award, for his long career and outstanding records sold.

Maybe it means that he's influenced songwriters in the early stages of THEIR careers? I mean...The vast majority of bands I've been ?"friended" by on Myspace have "Goo Goo Dolls" listed as one of their influences. I could be wrong, but it would make slightly more sense than it being the early stages of HIS career. ... Then again, maybe not. I don't know. How would I know?! *runs away with her Eddie Izzard quote*

My take on it is, they meant John made an impact on music way back in the early stages of his career, not that he is currently in the early stage of his career.

| I'm pretty sure they meant back in those years when John was in his early stages of his career, and on the way up. He is being honored for the work he has done in the past, through the years. They aren't saying he is in the early stages of his career. Make sense?

| Not really to me, no. According to the Hal David website I was reading, the definition of the award is this: Quote:The Hal David Starlight Award recipients are gifted songwriters in the early years of their careers who are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs. |
| It's present tense, meaning current work is making an impact now. And if we're being honest, though the music John wrote in the early stages of his career certainly made a significant impact on me (and many of you, I'm sure), his early work is largely ignored by the music industry and general population. But whatever. Yay for awards.

Maybe they're anticipating a career longer than The Rolling Stones'? ... Just an idea, throwin' it out there. XD
