Out of the three Goo Goo Dolls, it is Johnny Rzeznik who has received the most publicity — after all, he has written the majority of the band's material.
It can be hard not to lose yourself in the emotional lyrics.
But, when guitarist Robby Takac decided to open up about his dark past in a recent phone interview, his candid honesty was appealing — and just as emotional.
"I quit drinking a few years ago," Takac admitted. "You have a certain amount of chips when you are born and I cashed in all my drinking chips. There is nothing more charming than a young dude partying, but there is nothing more pathetic than an old, drunk dude."
Takac, 42, formed the Goos with Rzeznik in 1986 when they lived in Buffalo. The trio is rounded out by drummer Mike Malinin.
The band didn't make it big until "A Boy Named Goo" debuted on the charts in 1995 with the hit single "Name," but by then, Takac already had a rock star mentality.
"I played for 19 years absolutely out of my mind," he said. "I don't remember any of my shows."
Success continued for the Goo Goo Dolls; "Dizzy Up the Girl" was released in 1998, and the triple-platinum record produced the theme song to the romantic blockbuster "City of Angels," and the radio-friendly "Black Balloon."
The lyrics to the former, "Baby's black balloon makes her fly... I almost fell into that hole in your life... and you're not thinking 'bout tomorrow, cause you were same as me, but on your knees..." were obvious enough.
"I didn't write it, but I was around during it, and it was a pretty intense time," Takac said. "I was scared to death the first time I did a show sober. This thing, this buddy I had that turned me into an animated person, wasn't going to be there. I had to dig down deep. I found it was all super-real."
These days are better days for Takac. He's married to his "straight-edge" wife, Miyoko, who "makes sure my life is perfect," he said.
The band is back on tour, and their latest single, "Before It's Too Late," is on the soundtrack of "Transformers."
As for Rzeznik, he is "the closest thing I've ever had to a brother," Takac said.
