For aspiring musical pros, a high note
By Chrissie Thompson
NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac could not hit a baseball during his childhood, but he could play music. Now, Takac has found a way to teach students the behind- the-scenes work that makes up the music industry.

Finishing its prototype year, Music in Action, a one-year curriculum co-written by Buffalo natives Takac and Bob James of the student leadership program Student Voices, taught music business skills to 15 students selected by Buffalo Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts.

The course, provided free to the school, culminated Wednesday with a concert by six student artists selected by the student team for its CD, “Be True, Be You.”

“For the kids who can’t hit a baseball, this stuff is really important,“ Takac said. “To me, it’s just a bunch of people who are trying to do the same thing I’m trying to do.”

James said the student team began working in October to plan and produce its benefit CD for H.E.A.R.T. for Mental Health, a coalition striving to raise mental health awareness in New York schools.

The students spent one school day each month and some mornings and weekends working with Takac, James, Grammy-nominated producer Anthony Casuccio of Villa Maria College and Grammywinning designer Brian Grunert of Buffalo to produce the CD.

“We see this as the first real merger of youth development, education and music industry professionals coming together to help kids learn . . . skills that will help them in their lives in whatever business they go into,” James said. “This is about what is possible when community gets involved with school.”

James and Takac hope to find grant funding to expand the curriculum to five schools next year, including two in Buffalo, with Takac being more involved while he works on the next Goo Goo Dolls CD in Buffalo.
