Goo Goo Dolls' still hit years later

Friday, December 1, 2006

By MIKE KERWICK
STAFF WRITER

WHO: The Goo Goo Dolls.
WHAT: Pop/rock.
WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
WHERE: Hammerstein Ballroom, 311 W. 34th St., Manhattan; 212-485-1534.
HOW MUCH: $37 (sold out).

Robby Takac brings up James Bond, the British superspy who hasa knack for slipping under doors just before they slide to a close, and casually compares his band to the fictional icon. Like Bond, he reasons, the Goo Goo Dolls have been sneaking through doors that have snapped shut on otherbands.

"When it comes to career artists," Takac said, "there's not an awful lot anymore."

Twenty years does not seem possible. Could it really be that 20 years have passed since a few kids from Buffalo, N.Y., got together and started aband? Is it really 11 years since the group released "A Boy Named Goo"? Is "Iris,"the band's biggest hit, already eight years old?

"By most people's perspective, we were adults when we started this band," Takac said. "I really feel like I've grown up."

Takac and Johnny Rzeznik, the band's two remaining founding members, actually thought about pulling the plugon the Goo Goo Dolls after the way things went with their last album.

"We were really disappointed after 'Gutterflower.' The label released one video. The machine sort of shut down on us at that point. That was a little disappointing. Ten years at Warner Brothers... they never [came out and said], 'Hey, we're disappointed, so we never want to hear from you guys again.'"

According to Takac, executives at Warner Brothers openly wondered why the band's previous record sold 5 million copies while this one stalled out at 1 million.

"Only a million records?" Takac said he remembered thinking."Wait a minute. I had to look out a window and make sure I'm still on planet Earth."

It's the one downside of striking gold with "Iris," a song from the "City of Angels" soundtrack that refused to leave the pop charts. Rzeznik's lyrics ("And I don't want the world to see me/Cause I don't think that they'd understand") resonated with listeners, but the song's success also upped the ante for future Goo Goo Dolls projects.

"The phenomenon isn't going to happen all the time," Takac said."If you as an artist can't understand that, then it's going to be very, very frustrating."

Rzeznik, Takac and Mike Malinin decided to take one more trip into the studio. "Let Love In" dropped this past April.

"We decided it wasn't our enthusiasm that was waning," Takac said. "It was the enthusiasm of some of the people around us. We made a few changes. There's new blood involved. I sort of feel like we're on Phase 5 or 6, I'm not sure what it is."

Takac jokes that the band has "reached our cruising altitude again." Not only that, but they're excited about the next step. Takac said they hope to begin work on a new album next October and "hopefully many more to come."

"Maybe there will be a phenomenon again," Takac said. "If not,we'll keep dodging in and out of the shadow of that song. It really did give us the ability to move on and give us 'this illustrious career.'"

Twenty years have passed. The Goo Goo Dolls are still sliding underneath doors. E-mail: [email protected]

***I still can't believe the record company was so disappointed in Gutterflower's sales. I absolutely love the CD. It's right up there with SSCW. I love every song on it.***

Am I the only one who's tired of hearing about growing up, m-m-maturing, and getting old?

I hope when I see the show at the Hammerstein there will be
some semblance of kicking butt. For old times. C'mon.

Jeesh.

They definitely kicked butt in London. I bet you'll get a great show at the Hammerstein. Is it GA or do you have seats?

A little of both. We added one person to our caravan, so in addition to our original 2 GA floor tickets, we have 1 GA mezzanine seat. The whole thing is GA, no seat is assigned.

I guess since I am the old WoGer, I should take the mezzanine seat...and some Geritol. And get me an AARP membership. Arr...

You have no idea how big a grin sprang across my face when I read this, escpecially after reading the  "Rzeznik, Takac and Mike Malinin decided to take one more trip into the studio"
It was like "One more trip? You mean..This could be their..? No! People love them again!!"
But then they said that and I was like "YES!!!" ^_^
