Goo Goos drive London fans gaga

John Rzeznik has plenty of fun with the JLC crowd.

By JAMES REANEY, FREE PRESS ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT COLUMNIST

Maybe it was the Goofy Goofy Dolls headlining at the John Labatt Centre last night.

Goo Goo Dolls' frontman John Rzeznik was so loose and goofy early in the set, he had already posed for photos as a mic-swallowing fool and mixed up the set list.

The 2,800 cheering fans at the downtown London arena's RBC Theatre format still treated him like a Doll all night long.

"Now there are going to be pictures of me holding this sign all over the Internet tomorrow," Rzeznik joked before hitting a pose, playing off a sign about loving Polish sausage. A fan had handed him the sign and Rzeznik had so much fun with it, he went off his game of pretending to sell the new album.

The band had opened with a terrific Stay with You off the new album, Let Love In (Warner), followed by a mass singalong on the old hit Slide.

Shortly after the silly, funny pose, Rzeznik introduced the finale, Let Love In, to the stunned amusement of his bandmates. Nope, not time to let it in just yet. "I (messed) up," he admitted as his bandmates looked amused, before working his way into Feel the Silence.

Let Love In would not arrive for another hour-plus of prime, smart, catchy rock, including a singalong on 1998's mega-hit, Iris. "I think everybody in this place knows this song," Rzeznik said of Iris. Yep. He only had to hint at singing the chorus, he had so much help from the crowd, which had a lot of couples ready for the romantic Goo Goo ballads and many young fans who like the rock Dolls.

The Goo Goo Dolls -- guitarist and vocalist Rzeznik, bassist and occasional lead vocalist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin, plus two touring musicians -- are on the road to support Let Love In.

Their light show and stage backdrop helped with the sales message. The album cover's image of a gorgeous woman's face and its print title both showed up in the stage touches.

Rzeznik is pretty gorgeous, too, as well as being funny and spontaneously goofy. He handled such big rockers as Name, Broadway and the new anthem, We'll Be Here (When You're Gone). Takac took over for the lead vocal on January Friend, and his small yelp of a voice added a nice, punk contrast to the big ballads.

Takac also recalled their early days, playing Call the Office in London.

Then, it was time for the strong, positive finish -- the Goo guys' Christmas-themed song, Better Days, and finally, the main set finale, a driving Let Love In. The two-song encore finished with the new CD's cover of Supertramp's Give a Little Bit, a loud, happy and positive finish to a loud, happy and funny -- at the right times -- 80 minutes of a good Goo Goo time.

The Goo Goo Dolls returned to their home town of Buffalo to record Let Love In, seeking a bit of the western New York magic. After years in California, that put them just down the QEW from the opening act, Hamilton's Tomi (pronounced Tommy) Swick. He calls himself chubby, but Swick looks solid, not chubby -- and the bushy auburn beard that has arrived since the cover shots for his CD, Stalled Out in the Doorway (Warner), doesn't hurt.

There were cheers for Swick's A Night Like This and his Radiohead cover and his fine band. But there was also the usual gawdawful chatter over the opening act. That left Swick's slow and soulful one, Mine All Mine (or maybe My, Oh My -- it's on his next record) battling to be heard. Like so many openers at the arena, Swick deserves a better -- much better -- shot.
