Dolls come calling again

Tue, November 14, 2006

The Goo Goo Dolls hit the stage at the JLC tomorrow night.

By JAMES REANEY, FREE PRESS ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER; AND SUN MEDIA

Goo Goo Dolls' bassist and vocalist Robby Takac knows just where he was one very happy birthday.

He was at Call the Office and rocking the downtown London club with a song for his own party.

"I've celebrated a birthday . . . at the Office," the bassist and vocalist says.

"John (Goo Goo Dolls guitarist/vocalist John Rzeznik) let me use his guitar. I sang I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper," Takac says from California, the band's home for many years.

Takac doesn't remember the year, but it was Sept. 30 and likely in the early 1990s.

The Goo Goo Dolls play the RBC Theatre at the John Labatt Centre tomorrow night when songs from the new Goo CD Let Love In (Warner) are on the playlist, along with such hits as Isis and Name. Hamilton singer-songwriter Tomi Swick is also on the bill.

Will Takac stage a delayed birthday celebration when he's back in London and recalls the earlier blast?

Unlikely.

"I don't drink as much now, so I probably wouldn't do it again," Takac says.

The band is not likely to make much noise about two decades in the rock business, either.

"We had our 20-year anniversary this year. We didn't make a big deal out of it," Takac says.

Call the Office manager Tony Lima fondly remembers the magic moment when Takac turned 27 -- but who's counting?

"I'm pretty sure it was '91," Lima says. "They definitely played here quite a few times."

The Buffalo-bred rockers formed in 1986. Rzeznik approached Takac with the idea of a name change after releasing their self-titled debut in 1987. Having sold 8,000 copies, Takac was afraid of losing their fan base, so the name stayed.

The new band would often cross the border to play Ontario clubs, too.

"The cover was $4," Lima says of the cost of a typical Goo Goo Dolls show at his club back in the day. "What are the tickets for the JLC show," he asks, guessing that they're at least 10 times that amount or more.

(Not a bad guess. The tickets are about $40 and $50).

Drummer George Tutuska played with the Goo Goo Dolls for the first decade before a falling-out with Rzeznik hit at a critical point. A Boy Named Goo was the last album Tutuska contributed to and was replaced for that tour by drummer Mike Malinin. A backup guitarist and a keyboard player are touring with the three Dolls.

Name was the band's breakthrough hit. The 1998 single Iris spent a record 18 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. Dizzy Up the Girl, the record on which the ballad appeared, went triple platinum. Among those who still love Iris is Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne, who performed with it Rzeznik for Fashion Rocks. Lavigne also chose it as her first song to dance to with new husband and fellow Canadian rocker Deryck Whibley at their wedding last summer.

The Goo Goo Dolls almost called it quits after releasing 2002's Gutterflower, but after a little reflection and personal space, the band carried on and recorded in their home town of Buffalo Let Love In. They travelled to Buffalo from California as they went back to their roots to renew their inspiration.

Takac says there are depths and edges to the Dolls and Let Love In, but knows there are some who only identify with Iris, Iris and more Iris.

If that's what those fans want, Takac doesn't mind.

"I'm happy to be that band," he says.
