Goo, take 2 By Sandy Tomcho Times Herald-Record [email protected] At "A Day in the Garden" back in 1998, Goo Goo Dolls vocalist John Rzeznik said to the baby boomers from the stage, "You gotta promise me you won't get all stupid and nostalgic and come back here in your BMWs." Well, whether the grounds will be littered with BMWs Wednesday we can't say. What we can tell you is that the Goo Goo Dolls return with Counting Crows Wednesday as co-headliners at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. "We played 'A Day in the Garden,' which, I think, was the very first show they did there since Woodstock. That was huge," bassist Robbie Takac says. "There were helicopters flyin' around. It was wild. It was really fun." The Goo Goo Dolls had huge success years ago with the songs "Iris," "Slide" and "Here Is Gone." Younger fans are probably more familiar with "Stay With You," "Better Days" and a remake of "Give a Little Bit." Takac, Rzeznik and drummer Mike Malinin have been touring since their first album was released in 1987. This tour for "Let Love In" has had them on the road with the Counting Crows since June. Among the Counting Crows' hit singles are "Round Here," "Mr. Jones" and most recently a cover, with Vanessa Carlton, of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." (Wonder if they'll take a stab at "Woodstock.") And of course you've heard "Accidentally in Love," which was featured in "Shrek 2." Most recently the group released a live recording of a 2003 performance in New Amsterdam. Takac is looking forward to his return visit to Bethel and still enjoys reminiscing about the band's "Day in the Garden" performance almost eight years ago. "What I remember the most about that day is I met Joey Ramone," he says. "That was really exciting. He nearly ran me over once in New York while he was eatin' pizza, walkin' by and bumped into me. But I remember meeting him there, and that was really a big moment for me." The band rocked the crowd when it performed "Iris" the last time it was in Bethel and expects to do the same this time around, with maybe just a few differences, such as songs from the new album mixed in with old favorites. And, of course, a new venue on the familiar and meaningful grounds of Bethel Woods. "I think places have energy, and there's great places around to play that carry that energy greatly," Takac says. "That place is certainly one of them. I can't wait."
