Crows, Dolls unite for sold-out casino show Thursday, August 03, 2006 By DONNIE MOORHOUSE UNCASVILLE, Conn. - The Counting Crows and the Goo Goo Dolls joined forces for a co-headlining bill at Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday night with each group offering up hits during separate 75-minute sets. The bill makes sense given the era that these groups first broke into the mainstream. The Crows and the Goo Goo Dolls share similar backgrounds in that both bands first gained commercial success in the early- to mid-1990s. Review There was little else that linked the bands and the performances they offered for the sold-out crowd. Where the Counting Crows were dynamic and diverse, the Goo Goo Dolls were bombastic and blunt, and while the Goo Goo Dolls milked their hits, the Crows opted for a lazy cover of the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil." The Counting Crows closed the festivities with an 11-song set that began with "Anna Begins" and the sound of piano and mandolin. Lead singer Adam Duritz appeared in front of a six-piece band and a seven-panel video screen display. The band followed with "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" and "Omaha," a song Duritz said was "about being lost in yourself and lost in the country at the same time." Duritz had a lot to say over the course of the evening, having first appeared on stage after the opening band, The Working Title, to tout several local charities and urge fans to get out and vote. "This is an election year and if you are over 18, it is your duty to vote," he said, peppering his speech with some emphatically placed expletives. "Don't throw away that right. Be the right kind of American and go out and vote. You can register online. It is as easy as buying a concert ticket." The perpetually earnest Duritz led his band through rock songs like "Miami" and danceable songs like "Mr. Jones" and "Hanging Around," along with piano ballads like "A Long December." The band en- cored with "Holiday in Spain." The Goo Goo Dolls delivered a 15-song set that included several takes from their latest release, "Let Love In." The band, which features singer/guitarist John Rzeznik and bassist/singer Robbie Takac, ran to the stage to open with their latest single, "Stay With You." While the Goo Goo Dolls have gone from punk rockers to pop balladeers, they still retain a bit of an edge, especially when Takac takes over the lead vocals, as he did on "January Friend" and "Smash." However, the band has become about the hits and Rzeznik delivered them effortlessly with "Slide" and "Iris." They can become occasionally obvious, such as when black balloons were released during (you guessed it) "Black Balloon," but earned forgiveness with songs like "Broadway." The group taped a segment that will air during the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Labor Day telethon, dedicating "Better Days" to Jerry Lewis and his kids, and included a cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" in the encore. Thanks for posting this Triest. That's very cool about the MDA Telethon. Awesome thing for the guys to do. As someone who was recently diagnosed with MD this speaks right to my heart I really respect how much the guys do for charity.

| I'm sorry to hear about this Shannon. I wish you the best. It's great that the band is helping out in this way with the telethon. When it airs, I'll be sure to check it out, and send in a donation.

| Thanks. It's not the easiest thing to accept but I try to stay positive....try to look for the silver lining the best I can. I try to focus on the things I still can do and thank God for the mobility I still have.

Thanks. I'm actually quite lucky because the type of MD I have a very slow progressing and it doesn't affect any of my organs. I look at Jerry's kids and the things they've been through and feel very fortunate.
