Duritz brings depth to Crows’ songs Goo Goo Dolls set ’underwhelming’ By Andrew Hampp The Columbus Dispatch Saturday, July 15, 2006 Adam Duritz has put on a few pounds since his college rock heyday and now needs glasses to see his fans. But the crazy-haired singer of the Counting Crows proved himself to be one of the most compulsively watchable rock frontmen of the last decade last night at Germain Amphitheater. KYLE ROBERTSON | DISPATCH Adam Duritz, lead singer for Counting Crows, performs at Germain Amphitheater last night. Ever since the video for his band's breakthrough single Mr. Jones in 1993, Duritz has become known for his gesticulatory, herky-jerky performance style that makes even the most mundane of phrases come alive on stage. Duritz put his signature moves to use in moderation last night, but showed he still has an uncanny way of adding depth and emotional heft to songs he's been singing for over a decade now. The band opened with an impromptu acoustic take on Four Days, which Duritz explained was about a girl from with whom he fell in love between her trips to Cleveland. Another track from 1996's This Desert Life -- a lively Mrs. Potter's Lullaby -- was revealed to have origins in the Buckeye state. "Man, those Ohio girls, they will break you in two,” Duritz told the crowd. The slowed-down take on Four Days helped to set a mellow tone for an hour-plus set that also yielded a bluesy interpretation of early single Rain King, complete with Crosby, Stills Nash & Young-style harmonies. The band's frequent improvisations and interactions with each other were still engaging to watch even after five albums and more than 10 years together. The opposite could be said, however, of the Goo Goo Dolls, who shared the night's bill and played an hour-long set. Where the Crows were sprightly and innovative in playing their fan favorites, the Dolls were tiresome and looked downright bored. After all, it can't be a good thing when the lead singer of the second-billed band (in this case, the Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik) is so disinterested in singing his own hit song (Slide) that he forgets the words at one point. And where the Crows joked and shared stories about their songs' history with their fans, Rzeznik rarely acknowledged the audience and paused briefly to take a sip of a fan's alcohol from a beaker-like glass. Hearing him describe the concoction as a cross between “baby aspirin and vodka” was more entertaining than anything his band played over the next 50 minutes. What was especially sad about the Dolls' poor performance is that unlike the Crows, they actually had an album to promote. The singles (Stay With You and Better Days) were given by-the-numbers treatments, while Let Love In's title cut and notable album track Feel the Silence failed to stand out among the other mediocre performances of the group's extensive back catalog. Iris, the band's most surefire attempt at a lighter-waving anthem, was delivered in a ho-hum monotone by Rzeznik. At times like this it felt as if the band was just rehearsing as opposed to playing in front of a packed crowd. The Goo Goo Dolls' underwhelming set at least boded well for opening act theworkingtitle, who nervously strummed their way through pre-album release jitters (their debut aboutface comes out Tuesday) to play an otherwise solid batch of alt rock. On a night filled with rehashed versions of '90s rock songs both bad and good, it was nice to hear something new for a change. http://www.columbusdispatch.com/news-story.php?story=199110 Stay True & Rock On! John's always forgetting the lyrics to songs. I don't take that as disinterest though....he's human. Most of the fan reviews I've read have been the opposite of this review....except for Cleveland which was cut short due to rain. I know I've read fan reviews that have said they're not interacting as much. It could be that the guys decided to squeeze more music into the set and less chit chat. Since they're not closing they do have more of a timetable to follow knowing another band is waiting for them to finish. My show is in a week. It'll be interesting to see if my show is like this review ... hopefully not.

Critics suck and I think that some of the people that are writing the reviews for the concerts are biased because they are going in as fans of the counting crows and then decide to comment on the goo's as an afterthought and since they only really focused all their attention to the Counting Crows they took it upon themselves to say how not so good the goo's did.... I know that the Goo's were AWESOME in Albuquerque.

I was at the Columbus show and while I totally disagree with the reviewer about the entire set being "underwhelming" the guys seemed tired, very tired. There wasn't the interaction with the audience that we so love...very little eye contact and smiles either. But hey...it's the Goos, I love them...always will...I believe they are getting exhausted and had an off night...plain and simple. Looking forward to seeing them in Charlotte on Aug.29 Oh the IM seats were great, no worries there goobers

That's good to know about the IM seats. I have a show on Friday and still have no idea where my seats are other than "floor". So I'm crossing my fingers. I imagine the guys are tired. That tour schedule is gruelling.

Critics are one-sided, and can kiss my butt! It's his [one] point of view, and certainly not mine. Kyle, critic with finger up his butt, go see a Hanson concert-jerk! That's why no entertainer should never read what the critics write. It's one persons opinion, but can bring you down. This guy doesn't know what music is evidently!

| I got two of Robbies picks...that was a thrill ! I would imagine your IM seats will be good too, probably within the first ten rows from what I've been hearing. I hope I wasn't too negative in my previous post...I mean, musically it doesn't get any better than live Goo imo! And, I hate to say this...but it did kind of seem like they were the opening act at Columbus. Also, the crowd wasn't all that energetic ('cept for a few of us!) so they probably weren't feelin' it either! I just worry about them...and hope they're not getting tired of performing for us. Anyway, have a great time at your concert Shannon...and tell us all about it!

| I always felt this way when the guys opened for BJ too. I know they're co-headlining this tour but they're still in the middle with another act to follow. So even though they're still supposed to have the same amount of performance time I think they're aware they have to play their set and get off. So there's going to be this sense of urgency or jamming as many songs in an possible at the expense of the witty banter we all love so much. I'm really hoping the 2nd leg of this tour is them headlining smaller intimate venues. That's much like what they're doing in the UK and they're getting such a great response.

yeah, Shannon you're probably right about them really having to stick to the schedule seeing how their set has to be taken down and the next bands set up...that's a big undertaking ! I hope they do play some smaller venues...for us diehards...that would be fantastic
