Wednesday, May 31, 2006 Bethel site to bring back the music By John W. Barry Poughkeepsie Journal Nearly four decades after hosting Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and hundreds of thousands of hippies celebrating the 1960s counter-culture, the plot of land known the world over as Yasgur's Farm is a construction site preparing for pop acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and Ashlee Simpson. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a performing arts center built where the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair was held, was unveiled to the media Tuesday. The centerpiece of this $70 million project is an outdoor concert pavilion with a capacity of 16,800 that will host an inaugural concert July 1 featuring the New York Philharmonic. The 150 workers buzzing around the site Tuesday — laying sod, setting stone, hauling supplies and completing dozens of other jobs — are set to turn the site over Monday to the not-for-profit Gerry Foundation, which built Bethel Woods. In 1996, cable television magnate and Sullivan County native Alan Gerry bought the property at the urging of his daughter, Robyn. During a press conference Tuesday, Gerry said a big reason he undertook the project was to stimulate the region's economy. "We have something around here that people around the planet know about," said Gerry, who said a second daughter attended Woodstock and a brother who was a photographer took aerial pictures of the massive concert. "People know about Woodstock." Marianna Lamantia, who owns Buster's BBQ about six miles south of Bethel Woods in White Lake, is looking forward to opening night. Draw people in "This will bring more people into the area," Lamantia said. "The more people, the more business." The Bethel Woods concert pavilion is located over a plateau from the site of the original concert and is tucked into the side of a hill. The performing arts pavilion is surrounded by lush landscaping, dozens of newly planted trees, bathrooms and concession buildings made of wood, a babbling brook, two ponds and foot bridges. Scheduled to perform this summer are Simpson, July 8; Phil Lesh & Friends, July 9; Brad Paisley, July 28; Wynton Marsalis and others, July 22-23; Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows, Aug. 9; and the Boston Pops, Aug. 26. An interpretive center houses the box office, an events gallery that will be available for private parties and a museum. The events gallery is scheduled to open in October, while the museum is slated to open in spring 2007. Both buildings have majestic copper roofs. John W. Barry can be reached at [email protected].
