Goo Goos for lunch

The good news: The Goo Goo Dolls are popping into town Monday for lunch.

The bad news: You're probably not invited, and begging won't help.

Rockers John Rzeznik, Robby Takac and Mike Malinin are making a private appearance at the SC Grand Dinner Theatre in Lawrence as part of WIXX's 101 Club. Listeners who sign up for the club on the station's Web site use their reward points to bid via online auctions for the chance to hang with the band.

Less than 100 people will get to have lunch with the Goos, hear tracks off their upcoming CD, "Let Love In,'' ask questions and snap photos at noon Monday. But that hasn't stopped a lot of other fans from coming out of the woodwork.

"We're getting e-mails left and right,'' said WIXX program director David Burns. "We probably average 20 to 30 begging e-mails a day.''

WIXX hosts numerous 101 Club gigs throughout the year. Some, like an event with INXS singer J.D. Fortune and about 30 members last month, are private. Others, like the Bo Bice concert at the Meyer Theatre, are opened up to the public for a cheap ticket that covers expenses and benefits a local charity.

The Goo Goo Dolls actually called WIXX to see if they were up for a private party. WIXX was one of the first stations to play the band's music back in the '90s, and the group hasn't forgotten it, Burns said.

Fans bummed about not getting a chance to ask Rzeznik to please pass the salad dressing on Monday will have a shot at other Club 101 gigs in the future.

"We've got some things on the burner,'' Burns said. "There's definitely more coming for spring and summer."
