Group on alert for lead paint illness A public/private partnership is raising awareness of the high incidence of lead paint-related illnesses in Erie and Niagara counties, and how families at risk can make their homes safe from lead. Lead Connections was introduced Friday in Delaware Park during the unveiling of a mural created by children with lead-free paints. The organization is a partnership including Independent Health Foundation, Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Anthony Billittier, Environmental Education Associates and Robby Takac, bassist/vocalist for the Goo Goo Dolls. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 80 percent of the housing stock in the urban centers of Erie and Niagara counties were built before 1950. The national average is less than 30 percent. Substandard, aging housing is a significant risk factor of lead poisoning. Lead Connections wants to attract greater homeowner participation in training, assessment and assistance programming to help improve the incidence of lead poisoning. The partnership was created with the help of a $3 million grant awarded to Western New York by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Healthy Homes.
