Takac's musical showcase lets local talent shine By JEFF MIERS NEWS POP MUSIC CRITIC 6/9/2005 Robby Takac's "baby" turns 3 this weekend, and he couldn't be a prouder parent. On Saturday and Sunday, Takac's Music Is Art Festival marks its third year as a multimedia arts festival featuring the best of Buffalo's independent bands and a host of artists of various stripes. The mission? To shine a spotlight on Buffalo's talent, and in a very real sense, to celebrate our embarrassment of cultural riches. Toward that end, Takac and his team at Chameleonwest recording studio have engaged some 80 bands to perform on two stages at 510 Franklin St. between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The entire event will be recorded for a CD release to benefit Hospice of Western New York. Also this year, Takac has teamed with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery to curate an art installation and provide talent for the June 29th "Rockin' At the Knox" finale, featuring Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Last Conservative, and many local Buffalo artists. Takac says he's filling the third festival with "all surprises, all the time." "This year," he said, "we've got an MIA "Kids Zone, a gospel brunch on Sunday morning, a jazz and country series on Saturday morning, an NC-17 sideshow, a wine and beer garden, live muralists, awesome food, an improvisational nook open to anyone and everyone." He added that there's a free shuttle to the Albright exhibit featuring various MIA artists, and installations by Wendy Marvel, Mark Freeland, Amungus, Jon Simon and Brian Grunert. There will also be animals from the Buffalo Zoo, 60 artists and photographers, 16 dance troupes and over 80 bands. "Oh, and then there's the surprises," he said. It's been a long three years for Takac, who struggled to gain legitimate status for his festival from the beginning; the fact that it happens concurrently with the Allentown Art Festival was a significant hurdle for Takac to overcome. The group behind the Art Festival battled Takac long and hard, arguing that Music is Art was attempting to ride the longstanding Allentown Art Festival's coattails. Takac and his festival persevered, and he's preparing the biggest and most varied event yet. "I think the festival, and the foundation as well, have grown much more rapidly than we'd ever imagined," said Takac. "With the instrument drive, the mentoring situations and other involvement in other community events - the MIA High School Awareness series, the WNY Teen Battle of the Bands, the MIA Live at the Center, our involvement with the Buffalo-Niagara Guitar Festival, and so forth - all running simultaneously, the concept has really picked up some speed." Denise Botticelli, youth programs coordinator at Chameleonwest, credits Takac's ability to operate from a bohemian, "why not?" philosophical standpoint as a critical component of MIA's success. "Our mission is to emphasize the importance of music," she said. "Music is universal. The festival spotlights the outstanding talent we have right in out own back yard. People forget how much talent is in Buffalo. Every single night of the week you can find an outstanding local act playing here. I hope they get motivated to go out and see these great bands throughout the year." "The team behind the festival is unbelievably dedicated and creative," she said. It's ... something that the whole family can come out and take part in. That's what happens when you fill a room full of creative people, I guess." So why does Takac, who is certainly busy with his "day job" as bassist and co-leader of the Goo Goo Dolls, continue to push this labor of love forward? "Number one, I think I'm still having a blast," he laughs. "That was the catalyst for, and still is the driving force behind, this whole situation. I think having this thing work so well and come together so quickly is pretty good evidence that cooperation works...there's no arguing the talent that's always been produced...we just need to give that talent a reason to stay here. "Hopefully, this whole situation is helping push things that way." With 80 bands performing over a two-day span on two stages in the Chameleonwest parking lot, your best bet is to get there early and stay put. If that's not possible, here are a few of the many artists you shouldn't miss: Rhubarb brings its improvisational funk-jazz-soul brew to the right-hand stage at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday; Mark Freeland makes his indelible mark that day at 12:15 on the right-hand stage; Lee Ron Zydeco gets his Cajun on at 1:15, again on the right-hand stage; the Steam Donkeys play country as only they can, right-hand stage at 1:45; the Irving Klaws throw down their own take on psychobilly on the right-hand stage at 2:15; Seven Day Faith plays at 7 p.m. on the left-hand stage; Gamalon brings us some badly needed fusion at 8 p.m. on the left; Terry Sullivan kicks off his set at 9:45, right-hand stage; and the Lance Diamond revue touches down at 8:45, right-hand stage. Sunday starts with a gospel brunch at 10 a.m., followed by Willie and the Reinhardts on the left-hand stage at 11 a.m., Unkarved Block on that same stage at 11:30 a.m., Klear unveiling its new singer on the right-hand stage at 2:45 p.m., Invisible Choir left-hand stage at 4:30 p.m., the wonderful Fold In Half Cat, left-hand stage at 6 p.m., and Battle of the Bands winner Fat Apple on the left-hand stage at 8 p.m. ___________________________ Source: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20050609/1049732.asp

| I'm definitely going to try to catch these guys. Always cool to see people you know get attention. And as for a possible Goo appearance, I believe the 9:00 spot on Sunday for the right stage was "TBA"... I think this may be it...

They're a let's say "eclectic" type of rock. It's hard to explain. I know all the guys pretty well. I graduated with three of them last year. I see them at parties every once in a while.
