The Goo Goo Dolls are set to start recording their next album in mid-July - with guidance from illustrious producer Glenn Ballard to help "push us to the next level," says lead singer Johnny Rzeznik.

That's pretty humble-sounding talk from someone whose band is about to be honored as a musical legend at Thursday night's 13th annual American Society of Young Musicians House of Blues Benefit Concert and Awards Show in West Hollywood. "I guess I could sit back and be comfortable, but I want to see what more I can do," says Johnny, who tells us he wants to take risks with the next disc.

In fact, he notes, he left L.A. and went back to his Buffalo, N.Y., roots last year to stoke his creative fires. "I needed a good, long winter to get my perspective back and reacquaint myself with the plot, and it definitely had an effect on my music," he says. "The people there are the salt of the earth. It's a beautiful town. I found it a really moving experience. It's too easy here. I'm probably not long for L.A."

....makes me a little nervous with the whole taking risks on the new album.

when he says taking risks, i don't think it's anything to worry about. it's not like he's not gonna go from making rock to 80's pop or something. that's considered risky to me. i think he's just talking about trying something new. he went from DUTG music of more emotional, mainstream rock to GF with heavier rock - excluding "Sympathy" - which was something none of us expected. i wouldn't worry about it. it'll be different but we should all trust that it'll be great no matter what.

have faith. Wink

John once said he scared the shit outta himself with Sympathy. But that he took the risk and put it out there anyway and that it was a learning experience for himself. It proved fruitful and he wouldn't be our Johnny if he didn't take risks. It's what we have to do to grow as humans. he also has said, if people don't like my music then don't listen. he's also said he would never change anything that he has done no regrets in any of his songs. He's proud of them all. I don't think he would let himself or anyone else down now. Would you want to live your life asking yourself what if I....but never did. It would be cowardly to have all the options right there in your face begging for you to reach out and grab them and never did.

God bless him for taking the risks he has in the past and future.
We would never have NAME or Sympathy and god knows what else  without them. Everything happens for a reason..... I will love them reguardless for taking the risks on our behalf and their own. He has to say he tried.

DUTG SOUND WAS AMZAING WHEN IT CAME OUT AND WHEN GUTTERFLOWER CAME OUT THAT HEAVIER SOUND DEFINED WHERE THE GOO'S WERE THEN IN THEIR CAREER AND FOR ME  I FELT THIS ALBUM WAS EVEN MORE BETTER THAN DUTG - IF THATS POSSSIBLE - ITS JUST WITH TIME PEOPLE GROW AND CHANGE - SAME WITH MUSIC, IM SURE THIS ALBUM WILL HAVE A DIFFERNT SOUND BUT A SOUND THAT REFLECTS HOW THE GOOS ARE FEELING NOW. THAT SHOULD BE GOOD. ITS JOHN, ROBBY ADN MIKE, THEY HAVEN'T DELIVERD A BAD ALBUM EVER AND I DONT THINK THEY CAN - ESPECIALLY IN THE FANS EYES.
