John wrote the song for the movie City of Angels. It was in a time of severe writer's block, so it was kind of like a renewal song as well. He said he tried to write it from the perspective of Nicolas Cage when he was getting ready to give up his immortality because he was so in love. It was his thoughts before he made the jump, so to speak.

Perhaps if Mike and Robby had received the memo stating that this was a plaid-pants only affair, it would have spared them this embarassing social faux-pas. Black pants? How declassé.

What i got from the song is that it was a cry for attention (from Nicholas Cage) expressing his deep expressions of emotion that he loved the girl. It just showed that he would do anything for her and if he couldnt' have her there was no reason to live life anymore. I know, deep, but you know, everybody has their own opinion. I relate bigtime to this song..

SupaFireCross is correct. John said that in an interview not too long after the song hit the charts and the movie was a big success. That was the song that really put the Goo Goo Dolls in the main stream. Some critics even accused them of "selling out" at the time.
